It's A Wrap
Lately I’ve been pulling a lot of my wardrobe inspiration from good ol’ Pinterest! One of the items that kept drawing me in was the look of simple wrap skirt with a small flounce at the bottom.
To my surprise, it was actually quite hard to find the pattern I was looking for! A lot of designers have a wrap dress, but not a skirt. So I turned to the online sewing community for some advice and I found options for this pattern were quite lacking. There were a few recommendations for pattern designers that I was not familiar with, which made me nervous to purchase a pattern because of my lack of knowledge on their drafting block. So I started making a list of all the designers I am familiar with and started website browsing. I finally found one thanks to Ellie and Mac and their Wrap Skirt.
Now, the pattern wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but that was ok! It was the basis of what I was looking for, and if you know me-I need a pattern.
The one major tweak that I did was a different waist band. The look of the band wasn’t exactly what I was looking for so I opted to draft my own (I even surprised myself with this one!!). I pulled some help from a previous pattern I made, Summer Dawn by Striped Swallow Designs. Basically I really love how Mandalynn made the wrap style so easy with a simple button hole, so I went that route.
As for the actual band drafting, I just kind of went for it. I made the band three inches in height so that when it got folded over it was around 1.25in. The length was really just a bit of guess work; I measured the width of the skirt and just added length beyond what I knew I needed to make the ties. I also added fusible interfacing to the back of the waist band to give some support.
I’m quite satisfied as to how it turned out for my first go, especially with all the guesswork on the waistband. I’m actually quite excited with how well it turned out. For my next Wrap skirt I plan on shortening the flounce quite a bit and also playing with the front shape of the skirt. Hopefully it will turn out just as great as this one!
Fabric was supplied by The Fab Clique Fabric Shoppe. This is Hideway Tropics ITY, which will be stocked on the website June 28th 4PM PST. It is the perfect breathable and flowy fabric for a wrap skirt. It has a cool hand feel and perfect for summer wear.
